Several months back I came across a serious topic discussed by my dear brainy friend Akhila  Disposing of used sanitary napkins

Do read the significant questions and issues raised in the write by her. She has mentioned about the hazardous environmental impact created by the discarded sanitary napkins which are totally composed of different plastic variants. We already know that usual plastics take minimum 1000 years to break down in the environment in its natural way and the lifespan of sanitary napkins are said to be 25years while some say 800 years 😱🤯😰I am not fully sure about the timespan. For the past several months, I have been giving a thought about what to be done since I was shocked after doing a calculation about how many pads I dump one year. It was more than 300 sanitary napkins. I had to do something. That made me read more and study more bringing the better alternatives.

Using sanitary pads for so many years and all of a sudden shifting wasn’t easy. With the help and support of my friend, I shifted to tampons. I don’t claim that I have a  zero waste period instead I am better than my worst period past. This was comparatively easy except the initial acclimation time and the only difficulty was fixed time duration for changing it especially in the midst of sleep.

I had to adopt for the better alternative and that was menstrual cups. It’s made of silicon and has been scientifically approved for 10 years of use. It can be easily adopted if one has the mind to get rid of stigma for menstrual blood. So far i have heard amazingly supportive opinions regarding this and hence mine is on the way. It’s far better to have a normal routine even in your worst period days especially without any double check over the chairs where you sit (I personally always had to stay alert since i stained chairs and bed horribly). Why to get chemicals, rashes and heavy torture for the body? Why can’t we opt this and save such a huge amount of money 💰

I prefer to have a back up of reusable cotton sanitary napkins made of organic cotton and which claims for 5 to 6 years of use (100 to 150 times usage). I wasn’t aware about this until I found the instagram post of writer Meenakshi Reddy Madhavan. She has posted beautiful ( i liked it ☺️ though some might find it absurd) cloth napkins from the brand Eco Femme which is also available in amazon. So here is the thing: I decided to make my period “ZERO WASTE PERIOD” by choosing the ecofriendly better alternatives. I am not insisting that it’s a super easy way acceptable for anyone out there. But I believe it’s my responsibility as a human to leave this earth with less impact for the next generation😊☺️ I would be extremely happy and grateful if this post could make even one person think about adopting this or even one man sharing this for their known woman.
